a request

She’ll say
“Okay, let’s hear it.”
She wants you to say something
Make something
Create something
of meaning

But it’s not like that,
not always.

It’s mostly sitting
listening to folk music
Or staring at the computer screen
replying to emails
two days late
Sometimes it’s drinking

But it’s almost always
thinking about it
–Either not enough, or
even worse
thinking about it
too much–
that’s the problem

Distractions come easy
and you think about
the wrong thing
entirely

But you’ve got to make moves.
You’ve got to learn to
pull away from the lights
and sounds
of the quarter machine
and plant yourself
determined
at the poker table,
say a prayer to somebody,
and buy in
for more than you
think
you can afford
