Pockets

January 13, 2011

What do you do with your hands
when you don’t have pockets?
They’re cold, awkward,
homeless
Itching for direction
You can rest them on your hips
for a little while
But that starts to feel strange
and you can’t fit through all your doors
You can cross your arms
and tuck the hands
in the creases of your elbows
close to your body
But then you look introverted
standoffish
and you don’t make friends like that
You can clasp your hands in front of you
or behind
or twiddle your thumbs
You can use your hands
to build something
or draw something
or make the world a better place
or you can turn a key and drive somewhere
important
That sounds pretty good.
But pockets
Pockets are so comfortable
so familiar
and I’ve got a pair of pants
with pockets
right there in the closet.
